Addiction is real. It can take over your life and leave you feeling trapped, broken, and hopeless. Whether it’s drugs, alcohol, pornography, gambling, or something else, addiction leaves deep wounds in the heart and soul. But there is hope. There is freedom. And the way to that freedom is not found in the world—it’s found in God’s Word.
This is the message behind Delivered Overcomers, a faith-based addiction recovery ministry that meets every week at Bible Baptist Church in Crossville, Tennessee. The name says it all—we don’t just want to recover; we want to be delivered. And we don’t want to just survive; we want to overcome.
1. The Problem: Sin and Slavery
The Bible says in John 8:34, “Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.” That’s what addiction does—it makes you a servant. You may think you’re in control, but before long, the addiction becomes the master.
Paul writes in Romans 6:16, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey...?” Addiction is not just a habit; it’s a spiritual bondage. It’s a stronghold that keeps us from living in the freedom that God offers.
But the good news is, Jesus came to set us free.
2. The Promise: Christ Can Deliver
Jesus said in John 8:36, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” That’s not temporary relief—that’s real freedom.
The world offers programs that may help for a season. But only Jesus Christ can heal the root of the problem. In Luke 4:18, Jesus said He came “to preach deliverance to the captives... to set at liberty them that are bruised.” He came for people like you and me—people who are bound, broken, and bruised by sin.
Addiction recovery is not just about quitting something bad. It’s about finding someone better—Jesus.
3. The Process: Surrender and Sanctification
Breaking free God’s way starts with surrender. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” You can’t fight addiction in your own strength. You need God’s help. That begins with humility, honesty, and a willingness to change.
The process of addiction recovery is called sanctification—God working in your heart to make you more like Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” God doesn’t just patch you up—He makes you new!
You start by admitting your sin, trusting Christ as Savior, and allowing His Spirit to guide your steps. Through prayer, Bible study, and godly fellowship—like you’ll find at Delivered Overcomers—you begin to grow stronger day by day.
4. The Power: God’s Word and Spirit
If you want lasting victory, you need lasting power. That power comes from the Word of God and the Spirit of God.
Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Scripture is your sword in this fight. When temptation comes, quote the Word of God. Claim His promises.
And don’t forget the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” The Holy Spirit gives you strength, conviction, and comfort. He leads you in the right direction and warns you when you're going the wrong way.
5. The Plan: Follow God's Way, Not the World’s
The world will tell you that recovery means managing your addiction. But God wants to do more than manage your mess—He wants to deliver you from it completely.
Psalm 40:2 says, “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.” That’s the picture of someone who has been delivered. He’s not just out of the pit—he’s walking on solid ground!

Read your Bible every day. God’s Word is your daily bread.

Pray about everything. Cast your cares on Him—He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).

Attend a Bible-believing church. You need people who will pray for you, support you, and hold you accountable.

6. The People: Fellowship and Accountability
You weren’t meant to walk this road alone. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, “Two are better than one… For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.” God designed the church to be a family—a place where broken people can find healing together.
At Delivered Overcomers, we don’t judge your past—we walk with you toward your future. Everyone in the room has a story, but they also have a Savior. It’s not a support group; it’s a spiritual family.
We confess our faults one to another (James 5:16), we pray for one another, and we point one another to the only true source of hope—Jesus Christ.
7. The Proof: Real Change Through Christ
When Jesus delivers someone, there’s no mistaking it. In Mark 5:15, the man who had been possessed by demons was found “sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind.” That’s what Jesus does—He gives peace to the restless and purpose to the broken.
Many in addiction recovery have tried everything the world has to offer. Rehab, self-help books, therapy, new relationships, and new habits. But the missing piece was always Jesus.
When Christ steps in, everything changes. That’s not just recovery. That’s deliverance. That’s what it means to be a Delivered Overcomer.
8. The Promise: You Can Be Free
You may feel like it’s too late. You may feel too far gone. But hear the words of Joel 2:25—“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten.” God can restore what sin and addiction have stolen.
And He will do it if you’ll let Him.
